AI refers to simulation of human intelligence by machines / computer systems or in simple terms the ability of a computer program or machine to think and learn . It has the power to fundamentally change industries , work and life and its main aim is to mimic humans. They are poised to automate tasks which were once performed by humans . In the recent past  AI  has been able to accomplish this by creating machines and robots that are being used in a wide range of fields, one such is the impact of AI on the legal system . With its wide range of benefits it comes with potential limitations also which are :-

  • There is an increased chance of misuse and abuse as the information collected is with the AI engines which increases privacy concerns .
  • There is an increased potential of information getting hacked and stolen  as these AI systems are vulnerable to hacking , cyber attacks and data breach thus the lawyers need to make sure that their clients confidential information is being protected.
  •  The AI system is difficult and opaque which makes it difficult to  understand and goes against the tenant of transparency .
  •  The major threat is the unemployment that will be created in the legal sector.


  1. Will AI replace lawyers ? 

Even with the worldwide acceptance of AI, attorneys will still be all- important. Mainly the legal system depends on human judgment and AI engines may not always be able to replace the judgment . Human supervision is necessary as AI will not be able to handle complicated  situations that require human opinion , interpretation and strategic decisions on litigation matters.. AI can assist lawyers by contract review, document analyzing, gathering information, chatbots  providing legal information and assistance etc. 

2. Does AI have the ability to give legal advices

AI can be used to assist with tasks such as identifying relevant cases,searching through legal documents etc , but it could never replace the expertise and judgment of a human lawyer.
